In order to reduce the negative example in the public space, in 1972 the Latvian SSR banned the consumption of alcoholic beverages in public places. Alcoholism was recognized as a problem in the Soviet Union. Alcoholics were publicly condemned for being unable to work and passing alcoholism on to future generations. Modern psychologists specializing in narcology believe that the co-dependence that develops in the children of alcoholics negatively affects self-confidence and individuality. Codependent children don't care about their own well-being, but the codependent parent, their fear and concern for them. Addiction in the family causes emotional trauma and can develop into alcoholism.
