Conversations on inclusive cultural offering

Experience, research, solutions

07.12.2023.

Inclusivity and accessibility as concepts, strategies and methods are becoming increasingly present and topical in the cultural space of Latvia. To map the current situation in the Latvian cultural space, 7 December 2023 will see alumni of Latvian higher educational institutions, who have explored the subjects of inclusivity, accessibility, health and disability in their research and practical studies, gather at Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine and give brief lectures and presentations of practical solutions.

Tying in with the mission of the Museum of the History of Medicine to raise awareness of care as the underlying principle of a sustainable society and the museum’s ambition of increasing its inclusivity and accessibility to diverse social groups in the course of its redefinition process, we have invited a group of alumni of ten different Latvian higher educational institutions, all of them working in social sciences and the humanities, to an evening of academically informal discussions. What is their take on the current situation in implementing an inclusive and accessible cultural environment? What is the scope of problems explored by the researchers and what are the solutions proposed by the designers? Who are those most frequently left out, excluded from proposals of inclusive offering?

The event aims to gain an overview of the latest studies and practical solutions by alumni of Latvian universities and academies on the subjects of inclusivity, accessibility, health and disability and provide an insight into this body of research. Furthermore, it is important to provide the researchers, the audience and the museum with an opportunity of communal discussion on various practices, policies and strategies of creating an inclusive cultural offering.

The event will include a presentation of two video works: ‘Singing Lesson I” (2001) by the Polish artist Artur Żmijewski, featuring a performance of ‘Kyrie’ from Jan Maklakiewicz’s ‘Polish Mass’ (1944) by students of the Warsaw Institute for the Deaf and Mute, and a video of ‘A Latvian Lullaby’ (2023) by Jānis Lūsēns and Māris Melgalvs, performed by the youth choir BALSIS in the sign language.
